He also has devoted much time to education and teaching residents about how to become orthodontists. Dr. Oppenheimer, who is a Board Certified Orthodontist, enjoys being involved in teaching dentistry because it keeps him in the forefront “of what is going on in orthodontics. It also allows me to share my experiences and learn from other experts in the field,” he said. “It is the ultimate form of continuing education.” From 2010 through 2014, Dr. Oppenheimer was affiliated with Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center as the Director of Orthodontics. He helped to start the Post Graduate Orthodontic Residency Program for the hospital, where he trained residents and was an administrator over the orthodontic clinic. Dentists must complete a Post Graduate Orthodontic Residency Program to receive their certificate in Orthodontics, in addition to completing 4 years of dental school.
From 2005 through 2010, Dr. Oppenheimer had served as Director of the Division of Orthodontics at St. Barnabas Hospital Medical Center, and as an Assistant Clinical Professor at New York University College of Dentistry, Division of Post Graduate Orthodontics. In the past, Dr. Oppenheimer participated in the Dentofacial Deformities and Cleft Lip and Palate Conference at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He also trained his residents to take part in the treatment of Dentofacial Deformities, presenting at conferences monthly along with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Oppenheimer specializes in Comprehensive Orthodontics, Limited Treatment, Invisalign, Surgical Orthodontics, Early Treatment, Habit Appliances and many more areas of complex orthodontic and dental conditions. Dr. Oppenheimer has also treated numerous patients with complex medical conditions, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Down’s Syndrome. Dr. Oppenheimer has been married to his wife, Carol, since 1975. He has 4 children and 8 grandchildren, who he visits and spends time with regularly. His fun upbeat personality makes him a lovable pal to his grandkids, who he enjoys playing with at any possible opportunity. Dr. Oppenheimer’s devotion to education and fun-loving personality translates to his private office as well. He is well known for spending as much time as necessary to explain different aspects of treatment to his patients and their families. His fun demeanor allows him to joke around with his patients and make the adjustments pass by in a breeze. Not all orthodontists are Board Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics, indicating that the dentist has completed an American Dental Association accredited graduate program in orthodontics and, in addition, the dentist voluntarily submits to an examination process by a jury of experts as a demonstration of the orthodontist’s knowledge and pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence. As a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and Director of Post Graduate Orthodontics at different teaching institutions, Dr. Oppenheimer has remained at the forefront of his profession. Dr. Oppenheimer has been invited to lecture nationally and abroad, recently presenting a lecture at the Tel Aviv University Department of Orthodontics. He is also one of the few orthodontists in the country who is an expert of the Tip-Edge appliance system from TP Ortho. Tip-Edge brackets have a special design that allows treatment to be programmed from start to finish. This special design helps to reduce the number of necessary visits and to make treatment more comfortable by allowing more movement of teeth over time as opposed to a lot of movement at one time.
